IVAN L. HAND, JR.

Ivan Hand joined Money Management International (MMI) as President and CEO in January 2000. Under his leadership, MMI has grown to be the largest full-service non-profit debt management organization in the country, with six call centers and over 140 branch office locations in twenty-two states.

Prior to joining MMI, Mr. Hand was the Chief Operating Officer of Furmanite Worldwide, an international industrial services company. He has also served as President of Marine Shale Processors, an environmental firm, and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Advanced Communications and Information Services, a technology company.

Mr. Hand has served on a number of boards, including the Board of Directors of Advanced Communications and Information Services and the Board of Trustees for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. He currently sits on the Government Relations Committee for the Greater Houston Partnership and the Advisory Council for George Washington University’s Financial Services Research Program. He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Money Management International Financial Education Foundation.

Mr. Hand earned a Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance from Mississippi State University, participated in the MBA program in Marketing/Management at the University of Louisiana, and has taken courses in international studies at the Brookings Institution.
 
 
A. HARTIE SPENCE

Hartie Spence is Chairman of the Board and President of Hancock Bank of Louisiana, located in Baton Rouge, LA. Prior to joining Hancock Bank in 1996, he was President of Calcasieu Marine National Bank and Central Louisiana Capital Corporation, a bank holding company. Mr. Spence has also held senior management positions with the Louisiana Bank and Trust Company, the National Bank of Bossier City, and the First National Bank of Shreveport.

In addition, Mr. Spence has held teaching positions related to banking and credit at a number of institutions, including the Graduate School of Banking of the South, Louisiana Banking School of Supervisory Training, National Commercial Lending School (Credit Union Examiners), and the Louisiana Bankers Association School of Banking. He is also very active in the community and currently serves as Chairman of the Capital Area United Way, as Vice Chairman of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Louisiana, as President of the Louisiana Bankers Association, as Treasurer of the Louisiana Council for Economic Education, and as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana University Foundation Board of Directors. He is on the executive committee of both the Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts and the Committee of 100. He is the Corporate Volunteer Council’s “2002 Volunteer CEO of the Year.”

Mr. Spence earned a Juris Doctor degree from Louisiana State University and also attended the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He is a member of the Baton Rouge Bar Association.
 
 
DR. WILLIAM F. STAATS

Dr. William F. Staats is the Louisiana Bankers Association Chair Emeritus of Banking and Professor Emeritus, Department of Finance, at Louisiana State University. He has served as Director of the Bankers School for Supervisory Training, as Director of the Louisiana Bankers Association School of Banking, and as a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of Banking at LSU and the LSU Executive Program. Dr. Staats also serves as Director of the Farm Credit Bank of Texas and as Chairman and Director of SevenOaks Capital Corporation.

Before joining the faculty at LSU, Dr. Staats was Vice President and Corporate Secretary of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. He has been a member of the faculty at Rice University and at The University of Texas where he received his doctorate degree. He has also taught at banking schools held on the campus at Vanderbilt University, University of Florida, University of Oklahoma, University of Virginia, Iowa State University, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Dr. Staats has published more than fifty-five articles in banking and finance, and has written six books. He is co-author of How Chuck Taylor Got What He Wanted (And How You Can, Too!), now in its third edition, which is designed to teach the financial facts of life to young adults. He is very active on the speaking circuit, making over 100 presentations a year. He has done extensive work as an expert witness in banking cases in several states.

Dr. Staats earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at Texas Lutheran University, and his Masters in Business Administration and Doctorate degree from The University of Texas. Finance, statistics, accounting and economics were his fields of emphasis.
 
 
EFFIE WORRELL

Effie Worrell is Senior Vice President—Business Banking for Wells Fargo Bank. In this capacity, she is primarily responsible for all lending and financial service activity within the group and for developing a new non-profit area for Business Banking. Previously, Ms. Worrell was Senior Vice President/Regional Manager of Community Development for Wells Fargo and the former First Interstate Bank. As such, she was responsible for the bank’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) activities in Houston and surrounding markets and had regulatory oversight to ensure the bank’s compliance under CRA. Ms. Worrell was also the Vice President for Community Affairs for First Interstate where she managed the bank’s community outreach and business development activities throughout Texas. She led efforts in developing new consumer loan products and small business loan products for minority/women-owned business.

Prior to her career in banking, Ms. Worrell was Senior Asset Manager of the Owned Real Estate Division for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. She was responsible for the management and disposition of commercial assets from failed financial institutions throughout Texas.

Ms. Worrell received her degree from the University of St. Thomas (Houston, TX). She is active in the arts community and has served on numerous boards. She has also received numerous awards and recognition as a result of her work throughout the community, including the 2001 Women on the Move (Texas Executive Women), Outstanding Leadership in Business Award (National Black MBA Houston Chapter), and the Women of Distinction Crystal Award, (Diversified Transitional Women’s Center).
 
LINDA HOPPER

Linda is currently the Director, University Training and Organizational Development for Georgetown University. She brings twenty years experience in organizational and human resource development, consulting, training and executive management to the board. She has designed and implemented organizational and employee development programs, compensation, benefits, and performance evaluation systems. She also has experience managing programs in leadership, management, supervision, ethics, recruitment, staffing, compensation, benefits, performance management and review, mentoring, professional and interpersonal communication, public speaking, motivation, and employee development.

Linda previously served as the Vice President for Human Resources at Craver Mathews Smith & Company (CMS) where she developed and implemented human resources policies and programs. Prior experience includes working assignments as a Senior Consultant in the Human Resources Group of Sterling Institute and the Director of Training for the International City Management Association in Washington, D.C., (the professional and educational association for local government professionals).

ANGELA C. LYONS

Dr. Angela Lyons is an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin. She was recently identified by the U.S. Government Accountability Office as one of twenty national leaders in financial education and was invited to participate in the U.S. Comptroller General's forum on "Improving Financial Literacy: The Role of the Federal Government." In 2003, she presented testimony on the importance of financial literacy for young adults before the Subcommittee on Education and the Workforce for the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2002, she was a delegate to the National Summit on Retirement Savings in Washington, D.C. Currently, she serves as a consultant to the Executive Office of the U.S. Trustees providing expertise on the debtor education component of the bankruptcy reform law.

Dr. Lyons has been invited to speak before a number of groups and organizations including: the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Institute for Women's Policy Research, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the American Council on Consumer Interests, the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the U.S. Treasury Department, and the Foundation for Credit Education. She is currently the Director for the University of Illinois Center for Economic Education and the Co-Editor for the Journal of Consumer Education.
