HOUSTON (October 5, 2004) - The Money Management International Financial Education Foundation (the Foundation) is pleased to announce that it has funded a grant to support a consistent, high quality consumer education program for homebuyers. The grant was awarded to hoMEworks, a statewide coalition located in Maine and made up of social service providers and mortgage industry professionals, and will support their efforts to make homeownership education available to all consumers. Specifically, the grant will be used to videotape a 10-hour homebuyer class that will be translated in three languages and sign/close caption.
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), during 2000, the United States homeownership rate reached a record-high 67.7 percent. Unfortunately, there are still many people who never experience their dream, simply because they fail to implement a plan that prepares them for buying a house. hoMEworks seeks to resolve this through standardized, comprehensive, homeownership education programs delivered throughout Maine.
To continue providing quality programs to all consumers, hoMEworks relies on its partners in financial literacy to help support this important program. Carmella Clement, Director of Education and Community Relations for the Maine Center for Financial Education, said “As both a board member and educator for the hoMEworks coalition, I have seen firsthand the need for comprehensive 1st time homebuyer education programs. A well informed homebuyer is more likely to become a successful homeowner,” added Clement.
The Foundation operates to educate the general public on sound personal financial skills and money management principles by developing, delivering, and supporting programs that teach those skills and principles. "We feel that providing funding to hoMEworks fits the Foundation’s mission by providing consumers with the resources and instruction they need to achieve the American Dream of homeownership," stated Foundation President Ivan Hand. “Studies confirm what we have known all along—that homeownership counseling works,” said Hand. |
