Foundation Helps Teach Missouri Teachers

HOUSTON (September 14,2004) - The Money Management International Financial Education Foundation (the Foundation) announced today that it has funded a grant to support the development and delivery of a financial education program that the Missouri Council on Economic Education (Missouri Council) provides to K-12 educators. The goal of the program is to motivate and support educators who teach K-12 students basic skills in money management, use of credit, savings and investing, and other financial skills. The grant will also support the “Stock Market Game,” a unique simulation activity reaching more than 10,000 Missouri students each year.

According to surveys conducted by the National Council on Economic Education and the JumpStart Coalition, young people are lacking a fundamental understanding of how our economy works and are in dire need of basic money management and financial skills. In response to this need, the Missouri Council developed curriculum programs to help reach Missouri students.

The Missouri Council’s workshops were designed to assist instructors in integrating the teaching of economics into their classroom curriculum. The courses teach both economic content and methodology to ensure that teachers are able to easily present the content to their students. Through their efforts, the Missouri Council hopes to impact more than 900,000 Kindergarten through 12th grade students.

To continue providing these programs, the Missouri Council relies on its partners in financial literacy to help support this important service. “The Foundation is excited to assist the Missouri Council in their efforts. By helping the youth of today develop basic money management skills and the understanding wise use of credit, we can help develop a financially secure and knowledgeable adult of tomorrow,” stated Ivan Hand, President and CEO.

The Foundation operates to educate the general public on sound personal financial skills and money management principles by developing, delivering, and supporting programs that teach those skills and principles. "We feel that providing funding to the Missouri Council on Economic Education fits the Foundation’s mission by providing teachers with the curriculum, resources and instruction they need to present their student’s with basic money management skills that will last a lifetime," added Hand.
