MMI Foundation Awards Grant to Support Financial Education in Arizona

HOUSTON (September 11, 2005) - The Money Management International Financial Education Foundation (the Foundation) is pleased to reaffirm its continued support for the development and delivery of the Financial Fitness for Life program delivered by the Arizona Council on Economic Education (Arizona Council). The goal of the program is to motivate and support educators who teach K-12 students basic skills in money management, use of credit, savings and investing, and other financial skills. The grant will allow the Arizona Council to utilize guest speakers, develop a teacher’s guide, and provide a classroom set of student workbooks.

“Financial literacy is the foundation of self-sufficiency. Thanks to the generous support from Money Management International, thousands of Arizona teachers and students will learn the importance of building wealth and understanding the importance of debt to help insure these students will have a more financial secure future,” said Bob Vossoughi, Director of Development for the Arizona Council.

Understanding economics is important as it offers students a basis for principled reasoning about a wide range of personal, civic, and work-related problems. In fact, a recent report by the National Council on Economic Education shows that all states now recognize, to some extent, the importance of economic and personal finance education in grades K-12 as a foundation for the future well-being of our nation. However, only seven states make personal finance education a requirement for high school graduation; Arizona currently has no such requirement. In response to this fact, the Arizona Council developed curriculum programs to help reach Arizona students. The Arizona Council services more than 200 school districts, reaching 1 million students and 4,000 teachers.

Money Management International (MMI) provides extensive educational support in Arizona and the MMI Financial Education Foundation is pleased to be able to offer additional assistance. The Foundation exists to educate the general public on building sound personal financial skills by supporting programs that teach those skills and principles. “By partnering with organizations like the Arizona Council, I am confident that we will achieve our mission and make a positive contribution to the communities where we live and work," stated Stephen Bucci, Foundation President.
